You're right about technology and remote work spurring the exodus but these people are usually leaving for other cities. So there's a more fundamental problem at work here and it's clearly governance. NYC is being destroyed by incompetent (even malicious) politicians. Though of course these politicians were elected so in a way perhaps NYC is destroying itself.

And I agree, this time it is different. People can now choose where they want to work - and it's not New York.
